Asia-Europe Youth Camp
27 August - 10 September 2000
Shandong Province, PR China,
Jointly organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and All-China Youth Federation (ACYF)

The two-week volunteer camp brought together ca. 70 young people from Asia and Europe to enhance youth co-operation between member countries of the ASEM process. It was held to address issues of local deforestation and environmental protection in the Yellow River Valley as well as national heritage conservation in the area.

The environmental project was part of the "Mother River Protection Action" initiative of the Chinese government, a project aiming to provide water and soil conservation for more than 67,000 hectares of land in key ecological areas, as well as to enhance sustainable development mainly in the valley of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers.

Click to enlargeCultural interaction between the participants was another strong focus for the youth camp, which provides for the secondary component of cultural heritage conservation. This included a renovation project of a Buddhist temple, workshops and various excursions to world cultural heritage sites in the local region.

The co-organisers covered the costs of accommodation, meals, local transport and expenses for cultural activities during the camp. Participants were only asked to partly cover their transportation to and from Beijing.

This website wants to give an overview of the activities during the camp. Besides it provides an excellent communication platform for further contacts and co-operation between participants, organisers and interested public.
